Unlike cedar or redwood, pine, as a species, does not have natural preservatives to protect it in outdoor applications. Its high porosity makes it ideal to chemically treat against infestation and fungal decay. Regardless of the type of surface material you choose for your new deck, the frame will be constructed of treated pine.
